How to make a shirt larger sewing tutorial
This is a tutorial intended to instruct one on how to make a snug shirt a bit roomier and more flattering by improving the fit all around. As you can see in the before photo, there is tightness around the upper arm and the bust (causing that dreadful gaping of the buttons). And the hemline, waistline and bustline are all a bit too high for me! This project takes a fair bit of time, so I suggest...

South Philly Steak Sandwich
It has been over 2 years since I have been back to visit New Jersey, Philadelphia and New York City (the three places that I at once call home) and I am getting homesick. I recently became addicted to the TV show Boardwalk Empire (about Atlantic City, NJ in the 1920’s), and last night I reconnected with a West Philly friend from my squatter days that I haven’t seen in almost 15 years!...

smoothie (r)evolution
Dear Readers, I have given myself over to the making and consuming of LOT’S OF SMOOTHIES! “Why?” you may ask (or not, either way I will tell you). Because, 1. One can get in a lot of raw organic veggies in a day without eating so much salad that one begins to resent salad. 2. It can be easy to make and to clean up with the right supplies. 3. The alternative, juicing can be...

Introducing Your Best Sewing Tool: Steam-A-Seam
Today is about my newest favorite sewing assist, “Steam-A-Seam” and an on-going war I have waged with the holes in my wares. I have been sewing, mending, designing, reclaiming, deconstructing, the whole lot my whole life. Both of my grandmothers began teaching me how to sew when I was 5. My maternal “grammy” was an expert home sewer who made clothes, quilts, home décor and even hand-smocked...

“Something’s Not Quite Right with Grandad: In memory of Donald Ray Alexander Taken Too Soon by Alzheimer’s” by Karla Alexander. On exhibit at the Northwest Quilting Expo September 22-24, 2011. This heirloom momento may have been my favorite piece at the NQE due to the fact that it is not only a beautiful log cabin quillt, but I am guessing it is comprised of the...

Northwest Quilting Expo September 22-24, 2011.
Viewing the Northwest Quilting Expo September 22-24, 2011 was (as always) a very rushed endeavour due to the fact that I made too many plans that overlapped one another. Be that as it may, there is a sharpened focus when under the gun that allows me to efficiently select my favorite pieces. I quickly, automatically take it in for a few minutes, photograph it and move on with out being confused...

From here to there and back again... →
As most of my close friends and family already know (but perhaps not the casual blog surfer of art and design) after over a year of hanging up the practice of making my own art full-time (or at least part-time), and sometimes blogging about it, I am back at it again. The reason for the extended hiatus lies in the fact that I was employed by Laika Entertainment in Hillsboro, Oregon as a...
